Business Ethics: Why They Are Important For a Company and Its Success

By 30 Mar, 2017

Business ethics is an interesting branch of business theory, primarily because of the fact that they are inherently interesting in a market economy. People tend to be extremely distrustful of corporations in market economies and the bigger they are, the worse that problem of trust usually gets. Business ethics therefore are politically charged in many different circumstances and that in turn serves to make them interesting. Aside from this academic interest however, business ethics are also important for a company and its success. Here are some ways in which this is true.

Public Image

It is impossible to discuss business ethics as a branch of academia without taking a look at the relationship between business ethics and public image. Each corporation has a particular public image, which represents the way in which the public views the corporation. Wal-Mart, for example, has a terrible public image. Toyota, on the other hand, has a very positive one. These public images are the result of a number of different things, but they are primarily the result of the way in which a corporation acts with respect to the different things around it.

A corporation’s environmental policy, the way they treat their employees and the way they treat the communities they exist in are all part of their overall behavior and this in turn is the principle factor in determining their public image. As proof of this, you will notice that even though Wal-Mart makes products that have a decent quality and an extremely low price, they still have a negative public image.

Since public image is largely a result of company behavior, business ethics play a large role in determining public image since they determine behavior. And public image is important to success in most cases, which is one of the reasons as to why business ethics are important to a company’s overall success.

Investment

Another reason that business ethics are important is the relationship they have to investment. When a person or an entity is considering investment in a particular stock, there are a number of things they take into account. Aside from the quantitative factors surrounding a company’s profit margin a future prospects, consideration is also given to a particular company from the point of view of the qualitative aspects such as their public image and the products that they happen to sell. All of these things are taken into account before the final investment is made.

Therefore, a company that would like to encourage extra investment is a company that has a strong sense of business ethics. Part of business ethics is responsibility to the investor and for that reason companies with strong reputations in the field of ethical business behavior are also companies that tend to attract more investment from people that are new into the market. Investment is most definitely important to success.

Partnerships

In the business world, joint ventures happen all the time. They happen all the time because they are ultimately of great importance to the …

Current Topics in Financial Services Education

By 28 Mar, 2017

For those working in the finance industry, keeping up to date with current financial services education and current events are very important. Financial services training can help advisors learn about new areas of interest and keep up with the trends of the market. Relevant subjects such as healthcare are important to keep abreast of. This overview will go over some recent updates.

HEALTH CARE

Healthcare is always a relevant topic for financial services training. Health care costs have risen at more than twice the pace of overall inflation since 1990, more than doubling their share of the economy during that period. Even adjusting for the size of its economy and population, the U.S. spends far more money on health care each year than any other country in the world. As of 2009, health care spending made up 15.3% of the U.S. economy compared to an average of 8.8% for developed countries.

Under current policies, government spending on health care is projected by the Congressional Budget Office to rise to more than 18% of GDP per year over the next 75 years; since WWII, the U.S. government has collected tax revenue to finance its entire budget that has equaled an average of 18% of GDP each year.

DJIA: OCTOBER 2008 TO OCTOBER 2009

As you may learn in a financial services education course, the DJIA is a large stock market index. It was created by Charles Dow in 1896.

The table below shows DJIA numbers from October 1st, 2008 through September 2009. Over this period, the Dow dropped from its peak of over 14,000 down to 10,000 (October 2008) to its March 2009 low and then back up to 10,000 for the first time (October 14, 2009) since dropping to 10,000 at the beginning of October 2008. The Losers figures show the percentage of DJIA stocks with a negative monthly return; P/E reflects the DJIA price/earnings (source: WSJ Market Data Group). The DJIA hit a closing-day low point (6,547) on March 9th, 2009.

CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS

Another topic for financial services education is correlation coefficients. Correlation coefficients measure interdependence between two (or more) variables. In financial services training you may learn how to read these coefficients.

Over the long term, different asset categories tend to have predictable relationships (correlations). For example, U.S. Treasury prices usually move in the opposite direction of stocks because people buy Treasuries and sell stocks when they are worried about the economy and do the reverse as they get more optimistic. Over short periods of time, correlation coefficients can vary wildly.

For example, from the end of July 2009 to November 2009, the U.S. dollar index and S&P 500 were 60% inversely correlated (71% inverse correlation in October). However, between January 2007 and the end of July 2009, the correlation was just 2% (an almost perfect random correlation).

Over a recent 15-year period (1994-2008), the correlation between oil prices and the …

Affiliate Marketing: The Perfect Business?

By 25 Mar, 2017

In years past, people who wanted to work for themselves had to open a physical place of business, such as an office or a retail store. Such businesses often cost tens of thousands of dollars to open and set up, and anyone who didn’t want to do all of the work themselves had to hire employees to help them.

The advent of the Internet has made it easier than ever for people to work from home and enjoy self-employment. One of the easiest ways to make money is through affiliate marketing. In affiliate marketing, an individual promotes a product offered for sale or manufactured a merchant. The individual provides customers with a link to the site where the product is sold. If the customer buys the product, the merchant shares part of the sales price with the individual.

Here are a few reasons why affiliate marketing may be the perfect business:

Low startup costs. In order to get started, one needs little more than a computer and an Internet connection. This is substantially less expensive than opening a traditional brick and mortar business. If you need to build a Website, you can purchase a domain name and a hosting package for less than $20. For that small investment, you have the same opportunities to earn money as any other company with a presence on the Internet.

Little formal education is required. A bit of study on the Internet can provide you with all of the information you need to begin working in affiliate marketing. There are a number of forums that exist to help people sell things online; membership in many of them is free.

You do not have to stock, package or ship merchandise. The cost of holding merchandise while you wait for someone to buy it can be prohibitive. Depending on the sorts of things you are selling, you might need anywhere from a small room to a large where house. Shipping and package costs can also be substantial, and if you are shipping physical products, you will have to purchase supplies before you make any sales. With affiliate marketing, the merchant takes care of delivery of the product, whether it is a digital download or a big-screen television. You never have to worry about inventory.

It’s easy to add, remove, or change products. If you own a coffee shop, and you decide that you would rather own a bookstore, you will face some significant expenses in making that change. On the other hand, If you are promoting downloadable ebooks today and you decide that you would like to promote DVDs from Amazon.com tomorrow, making such a change may involve little more than buying a new domain name and building a new Website.

While there is no such thing as a “perfect” business, for many people, affiliate marketing comes quite close. The costs are low, the flexibility is high, and you receive the satisfaction of seeing your work yield results fairly quickly. Thanks to the Internet, it’s easier …

The role of government. Taxation. Business ethics

By 22 Mar, 2017

For the past two or three decades, determining the role of the government in business cycle has perhaps been the central political and economic issue in industrial democracies. Although the number of nationalized industries is steadily declining in most parts of the world, people with left-wing views still generally believe that the government has an essential role to play in providing the economic infrastructure (public transport, telecommunications, and so on) and ensuring the provision of services such as education, health care, social security and perhaps housing, and regulating working conditions, health and safety standards, and so on. People with right-wing views, on the contrary, generally argue that many (or most, or maybe all) of these activities can be left to private enterprise and the market system, and that the role of the government should perhaps be restricted to activities such as defense, the police, and the justice system. They argue that too much regulation is bad for business, and leads to inefficiency.

Foe example if we look at the role of the Department of Trade and Industry which is under the jurisdiction of the British government, we’ll see the following picture. The key areas of DTA involvement are developing of trade, investments and export, developing of industry inside the UK, and regulating or ensuring open, competing markets, mergers and monopoly policy. And the main focus of DTI’s work at the moment is to provide detailed analysis of the markets, the priority markets that Britain is aiming fir, for service of industry, and then help, particularly for the small and medium sized companies, to tackle those markets in an efficient way. The specific help is that each priority market, there are 80 of them around the world, have a desk officer who’s wholly responsible for providing information about that country,  detailed economic and political description of the market, sector information on whatever interest you. And then beyond that they can give you the help of the embassy of that country.

Besides that kind of help, government can be of help in other areas. One well-known American economist J.K. Galbraith tried to describe responsibilities of the state as he sees it. First of all, in no country does the market system provide good low-cost housing. This is a matter of prime importance and must everywhere be a public responsibility, because  badly-housed or homeless people are visibly at odds with the good society.

Health care is also a public responsibility in all civilized lands as well as many other essential functions – parks and recreational facilities, police, libraries, the arts. All those are more needed by the underclass than by the affluent. Those who attack the services of the state are usually those who can afford to provide similar services for themselves.

In the good society it also must be attention to science, including medical research. The market system invests for relatively short-run return. Therefore to support science is the responsibility of the state.

But all above mentioned information doesn’t mean that everyone …

Affiliate Marketing Scams: the Six Warning Signs

By 18 Mar, 2017

Affiliate Marketing Scams: The Six Warning Signs
Copyright © James Lowe, The PIE Guy

The internet is full of affiliate marketing scams disguising themselves as legitimate online marketing opportunities. These scams are devised to generate wealth for their creators without adding value to their customers or associates.

What are the signals then, which reveal an online scam trying to masquerade itself as a real affiliate marketing business? The following are six strong warning signs that a program should be avoided or analysed:

Affiliate Marketing Scam Warning Sign Number One: No Product or Service

If the opportunity to generate income is the only product, then this is probably a pyramid scheme. Pyramid schemes are illegal in the United States.

Affiliate Marketing Scam Warning Sign Number Two: No Website

A legitimate online affiliate program will have a detailed website explaining the program. A website does not guarantee that an affiliate program is illegitimate. However, you should be highly skeptical of an affiliate program with no website.

Affiliate Marketing Scam Warning Sign Number Three: No Affiliate Contact Support

It is a good sign if an affiliate program has a toll-free phone number. However, the absence of a phone number does not mean you are looking at an online affiliate program scam. If the website does not have an email or contact form, then you are probably looking at an affiliate internet marketing scam. If the website does include an email or contact from, send a basic question. If you do not hear a response from the company answering your question within a few days, then be weary.

Affiliate Marketing Scam Warning Sign Number Four: No Track Record

A great affiliate program is going to stick around for a while. Resist being persuaded by marketing hype that tempts you into a brand new business opportunity. However, by all means take up a program that you feel comfortable about and does not set off any of these warning signs. If you are still unsure whether a program is genuine, then wait six months. By that time, reliable affiliate opportunities with quality, high-demand products will still be around with a lot of money still to be earned. While, the majority of the affiliate marketing scams will have disappeared.

Affiliate Marketing Scam Warning Sign Number Five: No Free Affiliate Participation

You are not looking at an affiliate program if you have to pay a company to sell their product and make more money for them. Rather, you are looking at an example of multi-level marketing or MLM. Not all multi-level marketing opportunities are scams. Real internet affiliate marketing programs are free to join and participate in.

Affiliate Marketing Scam Warning Sign Number Six: No Positive Testimonials

Spend some time online looking for individuals who have had some experience with your program. You should be able to find some positive experiences and success stories, unless a program is brand new. Do not rely solely on the testimonials a company provides on their website. Use your favorite search engine …

International Company and Ethics

By 15 Mar, 2017

International Company and Ethics
The issue of business ethics is engaging companies more and more – both domestically and internationally. This trend is accentuated by high-profile examples of breaches of accepted standards of ethical behavior. For example, the recent Enron case where inadequate checks and balances within the firm enabled unethical behavior to occur, a development made easier by the failure of the external auditor to fulfill its role properly. Assumptions about ethics and business are influenced inevitably by fundamental beliefs about the role of business in society. On the one hand, there are those who believe that the sole social responsibility of business is to generate profit. For some proponents of this view, profit generation itself takes on a moral dimension whereas others see profits as the key to wealth generation – the main way of addressing social issues (Davies, 1997, p. 88). On the other hand, others believe that the role of business is much broader than that of profit generation and that all those who are affected by the way a company operates – shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, the local community, future generations (especially in relation to environmental issues) – have a legitimate interest and stake in the way a company conducts itself.
Many of these concerns are relevant to business whether it is domestic or international in nature. However, international business poses particular challenges and questions over and above those facing purely domestic business. In order to reconcile doing business internationally and remain ethical, the company should follow the main principles of human rights, comply with legal norms related to labor, avoid corruption and correspond to standards of environmental protection. Even though it is not easy to combine making profit and adjusting to ethical principles, sometimes failure to comply with legal norms and standards my result in negative public image for the international company and loss of customers. Therefore, international company can suffer even more damages if it decides not to follow the ethical principles.
The first issue related to ethics is human rights. It is a generally accepted principle that international company should not engage in direct infringement of human rights the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is commonly taken as the appropriate benchmark. However, some people would go further, preferring companies to refrain from doing business in countries known to infringe human rights on a systematic basis. Opponents of this view argue that if an international company abstains from conducting business in a country with an ethically dubious regime, the only concrete result is to hand over business opportunities to companies without such reservations (Barlett and Ghoshall, 1998, p. 110).
On coming to office in 1992, for example, President Clinton proposed to withdraw MFN status from China as a result of the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989 in which many pro-democracy demonstrators were killed (Kepstein, 2001, p. 108). Such action would have provoked retaliation against US companies operating in China and US business lobbied hard to persuade the president to change his …

Affiliate Marketing: Efficient Way To Advertise Your Business

By 10 Mar, 2017

Affiliate marketing programs. These are kinds of Internet advertising that payoffs the affiliates for getting traffic to the advertiser or for extra transactions. The advertiser pays the affiliate to direct a link on their internet site, and the affiliate sends traffic to the advertiser in return. Plainly arrange, it’s about compensating commissions to people who help you make sales. It’s that easy. NOT.

Affiliate marketing has its ups and downs. It could be draining if you are not armed with updated information and the technical how-tos. But this article’s exclusive target is to extend to you and not to drag through the mud affiliate marketing.

Here are the following reasons on why web marketers go crazy over affiliate marketing as a form of Internet advertisement.

1.  Low cost – Many are afraid to go on a home based business because of the capital needed. In affiliate marketing, you don’t have to spend much to start shoveling in cabbage.

2.  Low risk – The very important reason for Internet marketer’s enthusiasm with affiliate marketing is its bearing a low risk factor. Particularly for those with low budget appropriate for advertising, affiliate marketing is merely the means to do it.

4. Unlimited profit by leveraging – When you have a paid job, your monthly income primarily relies on whether you go to work or not. With affiliate marketing, your affiliates could all just direct traffic to your site without being forced to lift a finger after furnishing them your ad copy and links. Although not every web marketer gains limitless, it however makes up a reality that all the essential issues for the advertiser or Internet marketer are completely there to be successful.

5.  Go worldwide – On affiliate marketing, you are dealing with a worldwide market place. All you have to do is choose a niche product and organize all the essential tools for your affiliates to direct traffic from just about anywhere to your website.

6.  No closing time – With affiliate marketing, your business works seven days a week, 24 hours a day while targeting a worldwide market! What could be better than that?

But all of these will be put to waste if you don’t have the resources, the know-how, right niche product and all the other important tools to come through gigantic in affiliate marketing. So better work on this first before ever considering those benefits like joining reliable community learning school online.…

Business Ethics – www.tuition.net.in

By 7 Mar, 2017

From a business perspective, working under government contracts can be a very lucrative proposition. In general, a stream of orders keep coming in, revenue increases and the company grows in the aggregate. The obvious downfalls to working in this manner is both higher quality expected as well as the extensive research and documentation required for government

contracts. If a part fails to perform correctly it can cause minor glitches as well as problems that can carry serious repercussions, such as in the National Semiconductor case. When both the culpable component and company are found, the question arises of how extensive these

repercussions should be. Is the company as an entity liable or do you look into individual employees within that company? From an ethical perspective one would have to look at the mitigating factors of both the employees and their superiors along with the role of others in the failure of these components. Next you would have to analyze the final ruling from a corporate perspective and then we must examine the macro issue of corporate responsibility in order to attempt to find a resolution for cases like these.

The first mitigating factor involved in the National Semiconductor case is the uncertainty, on the part of the employees, on the duties that they were assigned. It is plausible that during the testing procedure, an employee couldn’t distinguish which parts they were to test under government standards and commercial standards. In some cases they might have even been misinformed on the final consumers of the products that they tested. In fact, ignorance on the part of the employees would fully excuse them from any moral responsibility for any damage that may result from their work. Whether it is decided that an employees is fully excused, or is given some moral responsibility, would have to be looked at on an individual basis.

The second mitigating factor is the duress or threats that an employee might suffer if they do not follow through with their assignment. After the bogus testing was completed in the National Semiconductor labs, the documentation department also had to falsify documents stating that

the parts had surpassed the governmental testing standards. From a legal and ethical standpoint, both the testers and the writers of the reports were merely acting as agents on direct orders from a superior. This was also the case when the plant in Singapore refused to falsify the documents

and were later falsified by the employees at the have California plant before being submitted to the approval committees (Velazquez, 53). The writers of the reports were well aware of the situation yet they acted in this manner on the instruction of a supervisor. Acting in an ethical

manner becomes a secondary priority in this type of environment. As stated by Alan Reder, . . . if they [the employees] feel they will suffer retribution, if they report a problem, they aren’t too likely to open their mouths. (113). The workers knew that if the reports were …

Branding / Logo Design

Reaching your target audience in terms of fulfilling their needs and causing an impact can be achieved if they can easily identify with the product or service you are providing them. Many businesses are increasingly aware of this and realise the importance of their company brand has in capturing and maintaining the attention of their customers. Some companies do not express any brand values with any form of consistency and their product or service may not function to create more of an awareness of the brand itself.

So why is the brand image of a company so important? A brand doesn’t merely function as the company logo but has a far greater responsibility in shaping the perceptions and feel of a company. It signifies a linked series of statements, which helps to construct an image of what they represent and the experience that the target audience can anticipate when they interact with the company.

Brand Image Generation

The creation of a successful brand image for a company relies upon the incorporation of certain core ideals, for example, quality, value for money and catering for individuals from all sectors of the general public. This in turn is a key tool to reach customers and involves constructing a promise that will capture their attention thus enabling them to identify with what your company has to offer them. The brand image is essentially the visualisation and expression of the core brand values that are to be portrayed to the customers. This can be accomplished by creating a brand image and ensuring its expression is consistent by means of a variety of mediums, such as the company website, advertising/promotional material, stationery, signage and vehicle livery.

The generation or revival of a company brand image will provide the company with a greater sense of direction by providing corporate strength and distinction in the marketplace.

Brand Interactivity

Creating an impacting brand image for a company will increase the customer awareness of the brand to levels not previously experienced. Consequently, this can increase interaction between the brand and its target audience significantly. The knock-on effect is the elevation of the company profile, which gives customers the confidence they want from any brand they wish to make a regular part of their lives.

It is important to increase interactivity between the customers and the organisation in its entirety and not just with the products on sale. This is especially true when a company does not just provide one unique product but a whole series of items.

Sustained Market Position

A well echoed brand image will positively influence the way your customer thinks about your company and the values they associate with it. Ensuring that your customers associate you with satisfying their needs will raise your company profile and subsequently increase sales.

The effective maintenance of the brand image is imperative since failing to do so means a short-lived presence in competitive markets, particularly in markets where your company is up against rival …
